Police arrested a woman Monday who they say pretended to assist an elderly woman involved in a car accident but stole from her instead.
While the victim was stuck in her car waiting for rescue crews, Rachel L. Murray, 30, got into the woman's vehicle and reassured her that she would be fine and that paramedics were on their way. At the same time, police said, Murray was also going through the victim's purse, stealing her credit cards, ID and Social Security card.
Murray left the scene before paramedics and law enforcement officers arrived. She made multiple purchases with the victim's credit cards at numerous stores, totaling approximately $2,000.
Through investigation and follow-ups at stores where the fraudulent purchases were made, detectives were able to track Murray down.
Murray is charged with vehicle burglary, theft with a victim over age 65, credit card theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, scheme to defraud and violation of the Pawn Broker Act.
