Woman assisting injured motorist killed by passing cars

Motorcyclist also killed

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Two people are dead following an overnight accident in Volusia County.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that a 23-year-old man on a motorcycle lost control of it while traveling south on U.S. 1 just south of Harbor Road. He landed in the inside southbound travel lanes of the highway.

Tina Martin, 33, of New Smyrna Beach, was traveling northbound on U.S. 1 when she stopped to give assistance to the accident victim. That's when both she and the motorcycle driver were struck by a vehicle driven by James Nichols, 52, of Daytona Beach,  troopers said.

Troopers said a vehicle driven by Penelope Ferguson, 39, of Port Orange, also struck the motorcycle driver in the roadway.

The driver of the motorcycle and Martin were pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the motorcycle driver has been withheld until notification of next of kin is completed.

The crash remains under investigation.
