WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. - A 55-year-old woman says she was beaten and robbed Sunday night in the Tuscawilla area of Winter Springs, just feet from a local fire station.
Winter Springs police said that on Sunday night around 8:30, the victim said she left her home in the Arrowhead neighborhood to go for a jog.
When she got to the fire station along Northern Way, just a few blocks away, that's when she said a man attacked. He told her, "Don't resist, I have a gun," and then dragged her into the grass, beat her and took her cellphone.
"Shocked, very shocked because it's a safe neighborhood, or so we thought," said Jennifer Branham. "You would think that would be the safe place to be."
Police said several officers went to the area and looked for possible suspects but didn't locate anyone.
"The police department has seasoned investigators looking into every possible detail and they have been doing so since the case was started," Winter Springs police said. "We do not believe there is any outstanding danger to the public and feel this case is isolated at this time."
Police clarified to Local 6 that the attack has been termed "isolated" because "we have no corroborating information in the county or surrounding areas that lead us to believe otherwise."
After the attack, the victim ran to a 7-Eleven just a few blocks away to get help. She arrived with blood all over her face and clerks told Local 6 her eyes were swollen shut.
Police said she was still in the hospital recovering with broken bones in her face. Local 6 called her house hoping to speak with her family to see how she's doing, but the man who answered did not want to talk.
Winter Springs police have increased patrols in the area.
"I had noticed police on my street, driving slowly and appearing like they were looking for someone," said Emily Cattell, who lives nearby. "It's not what I expect around here. We don't have this kind of stuff happen very often."
Police were hoping to release a sketch of the attacker, but right now they're getting conflicting information from witnesses.
