Woman critically injured in skydiving accident in Volusia

911 caller reports accident near DeLand airport

DeLAND, Fla. – A skydiver was taken to the hospital with head injuries after an accident in DeLand.

The caller said the accident occurred around 10:15 a.m. Friday near the DeLand Airport on Detrick Avenue just north of U.S. Highway 92.

DeLand police said at around 11 a.m. an incident occurred involving 30-year-old Aline Leao from Brazil.

The skydiver had made 14 jumps in the past and there was an instructor with her from Skydive DeLand, but she jumped alone, police said. 

Just above tree level, she experienced an unknown problem and cut her chute away dropping approximately 30 feet to 40 feet to ground.

Leao suffered head injuries and was taken to Halifax Hospital, according to police.

Details of the incident, including what caused the accident, were not immediately known.

Authorities continue to investigate the accident.
