Woman gives birth at Costco in Winter Park

Rick Davis helps fiancee with special delivery

WINTER PARK, Fla. – A man driving his pregnant fiancee to a hospital was forced to pull over in a Costco parking lot in Winter Park, where the woman gave birth to a bouncing baby girl.

Rick Davis said his fiancee, Chantill Ortiz, started having labor pains and her water broke around 4 a.m. Wednesday so he loaded her into his pickup truck and headed to the hospital.

On the way, however, the baby couldn't wait, so Davis pulled over in the parking lot of the store, located at University Boulevard and Forsyth Drive, and helped deliver the baby in the pickup.

Ortiz, who was due on March 6, gave birth to a baby girl, whom they named Celeste.

Davis said he cleared the baby's mouth and tied off her umbilical cord before calling 911.

"I got to go through everything, giving birth to the baby, clearing her mouth out -- she's crying, she's healthy," Davis said.  "My girl's doing good, so we're just happy.  I'm just feeling blessed."

Paramedics arrived and took Ortiz and Celeste to a hospital.

Davis said they're both doing well. Celeste has two big brothers at home.

The manager at the Costco tells Local 6 they are giving the family a "survival kit" that includes diapers and a membership.
