ORLANDO, Fla. – The driver in a deadly 2013 hit-and-run crash was sentenced to a year and a day in jail on Monday.

Kila Holland was a 21-year-old University of Central Florida student when her car struck a bicycle ridden by 18-year-old Travis Luque Exposito and his sister 17-year-old Melanie Luque Exposito in the early morning of Dec. 6, 2013.

Melanie Luque Exposito, who attended University High School, died from her injuries and Travis Luque Exposito was critically injured.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the siblings were riding a bicycle near the intersection of Dean Road and State Road 50 when a black Mercedes hit them and the driver took off.

Holland went to the Florida Highway Patrol office hours after the wreck with her attorney and would not comment on whether she was driving the car at the time of the crash, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Holland pleaded no contest to leaving the scene of a fatal crash.

In 2013, Exposito family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the two owners of the vehicles, Holland and her mother, Nikki Holland.

Holland will serve her sentence in the Orange County Jail and will be on probation for 10 years. Her license will also be suspended for three years.
