George Zimmerman will ask state to cover legal bills

State law allows him to request thousands

SANFORD, Fla – George Zimmerman's lawyer will soon ask the state to reimburse his client for hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal costs.

A representative for Mark O'Mara confirmed to Local 6 Monday night that O'Mara is in the process of crafting a motion to have the state pay Zimmerman between $200,000 and $300,000.

Florida law states that any defendant acquitted of a crime is not liable for any of the costs associated with their case.  The law does not cover attorney fees, but the money would cover the costs of everything from expert witnesses to depositions.

It's not known when O'Mara will file the motion.

Zimmerman was found not guilty on July 13 after being charged with murder in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford.
