NFL Preseason Preview - Jacksonville (2-0) At Tampa Bay (2-1)
By Brian Gillespie, NFL Analyst New coach Jack Del Rio will attempt to keep his
Jacksonville Jaguars unbeaten in the preseason Saturday night, when they
battle the in-state rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. Jacksonville tallied its second consecutive victory last weekend, downing
Miami 27-23. First round draft pick Byron Leftwich threw a 17-yard touchdown
pass to Donald Hayes with just over a minute remaining to lift the Jags to the
win. Leftwich, the seventh overall pick of the draft, had signed with the team
earlier in the week and saw his first professional action. The Marshall
product completed 7-of-10 passes for 84 yards in the final nine minutes of the
fourth quarter. Leftwich is the quarterback of the future for the Jags, but
starter Mark Brunell sat out to allow David Garrard a chance with the first-
team offense. Garrard played the entire first half and finished 12-of-17 for
135 yards. The Jaguars were still without starting RB Fred Taylor, who is
sidelined with a bone bruise in his left knee. Taylor will likely be held out
of the entire preseason slate. Top WR Jimmy Smith will be out for a while, as
he has been suspended by the league for the first four regular season games. Tampa Bay had its preseason bubble burst on Monday, as it fell 26-16 to the
St. Louis Rams. Rookie Chris Simms completed 10-of-13 passes with two
touchdowns in relief of starter Brad Johnson for the defending Super Bowl
champs. Charles Lee, who caught three passes for 45 yards, and Fabian Davis
were the recipients of Simms' TD tosses. Thomas Jones led the Bucs' ground
attack with 47 yards on nine carries. Johnson saw limited action, completing
7-of-9 passes for 55 yards. Tampa Bay hurt itself with 12 penalties for 124
yards in the loss. Look for a much crisper effort from the Bucs this week. The
Bucs nailed down a key piece to their defensive puzzle on Tuesday, as they
gave defensive tackle Anthony McFarland a five-year extension through 2008. Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Tampa Bay 24, Jacksonville 7 08/21 13:48:54 ET
