Surging Thrashers Host Hobbled Oilers
(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Thrashers will try to extend their longest winning streak of the season to four games when they host today's contest at Philips Arena against an Edmonton Oilers club that has been decimated by injuries. The Thrashers picked up their third straight victory in convincing fashion Friday, as the destroyed the visiting Los Angeles Kings by a 7-0 score. It was also the fifth victory in seven contests for Atlanta. Ilya Kovalchuk and Maxim Afinogenov both registered two goals and collected two assists, as the Thrashers breezed past the Kings. Kovalchuk has recorded seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) in two games since returning from a six-game absence due to a broken foot. The Russian star has 12 goals and 17 points in just 10 games this season. Impressive rookie Evander Kane, the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, scored twice and set up another tally for the Thrashers. Nearly lost in Atlanta's offensive surge was goaltender Ondrej Pavelec, who made 38 saves. "There was a little pressure on me. I didn't play in the last two games and we won so I needed to keep it up," Pavelec said. "We played great hockey for 60 minutes. I'm happy for (the shutout), but most important we got the two points." The Thrashers are playing the second of five straight on home ice this afternoon and they have a 3-4-0 record as the host this year. Atlanta will also welcome Boston, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay to town before capping the residency.. Meanwhile, Edmonton and head coach Pat Quinn have been playing without all of their weapons in recent weeks as the club has battled injury after injury. There is at least one bit of good news in that department as Shawn Horcoff is expected to return today after missing the previous four games with a shoulder injury. "I'm going to play on (Sunday) for sure," Horcoff told the team's Web site."I think I was kind of close last game, but still the extra four days would be beneficial. Like I said, I'm feeling better and better every day. I'll be ready to go." The Oilers will still be without Fernando Pisani (colitis), Sheldon Souray (concussion), Ryan Stone (knee), Denis Grebeshkov (knee) and Jean-Francois Jacques (back), and that's just to name a few of Edmonton's walking wounded. Liam Reddox (facial laceration/wrist), Patrick O'Sullivan (foot) and Robert Nilsson (head) are also questionable for today's game. In part due to the injuries, the Oilers have dropped two straight, five of six and eight of their last 10 games. The club last played Wednesday in Buffalo when it was handed a 3-1 setback by the Sabres. Steve Montador's goal midway through the second period was the eventual game-winner for Buffalo at HSBC Arena. O'Sullivan tallied for the Oilers, who also dropped a 4-3 shootout decision at Ottawa on Tuesday. Nikolai Khabibulin made 23 saves in the setback. Edmonton is making the fourth stop on a five-game road trip today and will close out the swing Monday in Columbus. The Oilers are just 2-6-1 as the guest this season. This is the only scheduled meeting between the Oilers and Atlanta this season. The Thrashers recorded an overtime win in Edmonton last year, ending a three- game slide against the Oilers. Edmonton has still taken two straight and three of four in Atlanta.
