As the goaltender went behind the net in an attempt to play the puck, he fanned and Yelle was there to stuff it into the empty net. Atlanta got on the board at 10:31 of the middle stanza. After a Carolina failed clearing attempt, Tobias Enstrom gathered the puck and spotted Kane, who redirected it past Legace. Samsonov put the 'Canes ahead by two just over three minutes later when he took a perfect backhand pass from Cole and put it into a wide-open net. Carolina then took advantage of a Thrashers' turnover while skating shorthanded and broke out two-on-one.
