Officials said after a vote for the Estancia town trustee position between Josie Richards and Michelle Dunlap ended in a draw, the game of chance was proposed.

Richards used a pair of 9s to win the hand and the election.

"I was very nervous, of course," Richards said. "I'm a big competitor and I wanted this position."

The unusual method of determining an election winner has been done before in a New Mexico election.

In 2006, Edgewood's mayor was chosen by a card draw.

Under New Mexico law, in the event of a tie, the winner is chosen by a game of chance.
