Confidential banking information and deposits made by thousands of people in Daytona Beach, Fla., were stolen when robbers managed to chisel a night bank deposit box out of a wall, according to Local 6 News.
Investigators said the large deposit box, containing money from churches and other deposits made by Biketoberfest visitors over the weekend, was chiseled from the SunTrust bank located on Palmetto Avenue in Daytona Beach.
Detectives said the bandits not only stole cash but also got away with confidential banking information, including bank routing numbers for personal and corporate accounts.
"Identity theft experts said this is exactly how thieves steal a person's identity," Local 6's Tarik Minor reported.
"The identity is getting compromised and you know we got this big thing with identity theft going on now," identity theft expert Theodore Walker said. "To me, it is more than the money. If a person finds your address and you are the one who dropped the money and they are crazy like this, they'll come to your house. You never know, these people are desperate."
Police do not know how many people were victimized by the crime.
"Some of these victims won't know they have been robbed until their deposit never posts to their bank account," Minor said.
Daytona Beach detectives are reviewing surveillance video to see if the crime was filmed.
