ORLANDO, Fla. -- Several Central Florida patients who went for a consultation say they are not paying for procedures they never received, according to a Local 6 News investigation.
The report featured Laurie Mendoza, who decided to get a tummy tuck after hearing an advertisement on the radio for The People's Choice Clinic in Baldwin Park.
After a consultation, Mendoza opted for a non-invasive procedure. However, she did not have a way to finance it.
"(A worker) said we have a few credit cards that we can apply for that we work with and we can apply for one of them for you," Mendoza said.
Mendoza said she was approved for a $10,000 credit account through GE Money bank.
"When we decided to set up the appointment right then and there, $4,500 was taken off," Mendoza said.
"And you were OK with that?" Local 6 reporter Nancy Alvarez said.
"Yes, I was OK with that because I was planning on doing the procedure," Mendoza said.
However, shortly after her appointment, Mendoza had a change of heart, Local 6's Nancy Alvarez said.
"She was prepared to pay a $450 cancellation fee and move on," Alvarez said. "But, she says People's Choice had other plans."
Mendoza said the clinic charged her account the full amount of surgery plus another $7,000 mystery charge she never authorized.
"You've never gotten an explanation as to why a charge was put on there?" Alvarez said.
"Nothing," Mendoza said. "The only one who said something was the receptionist and she said it must have been some kind of computer error."
"Little did Mendoza know, another client was also looking for answers," Alvarez said.
"They woman said to me, 'I just want you to know you authorized a $12,000 charge on your account yesterday,'" Mendoza said. "And I said, 'I did not.'"
Beverly Brown is also at the center of a dispute with People's Choice, the report said.
She too went in for a consultation and said in the end she was charged a total of $18,000, Alvarez reported.
Alvarez said she tried to see the doctor or anyone at People's Choice who could talk about the dispute.
"The manager in charge clearly wanted nothing to do with us or our camera," Alvarez said. "But a clue as to what's going on did come in a letter to patients."
In the letter, the general manager wrote about an investigation of an upper-level employee suspected of committing fraud against the clinic, the report said.
"He tells his clients (that) People's Choice will make their monthly payments until the situation is straightened out," Alvarez said. "These women said that has not happened and they've been left paying for procedures they never received and bills they can't afford."
GE Money Bank said it is reviewing the charges for at least six other patients with disputes, the report said.
A lawyer for People's Choice said it has filed for reorganization.
