Glidemaster Captures Kentucky Futurity

POSTED: Saturday, October 7, 2006

(Sports Network) - Hambletonian winner Glidemaster is two- thirds of the way to winning the 2006 trotting Triple Crown. Saturday at The Red Mile the three-year-old trotter out sprinted E L Mikko down the stretch to win the second heat of the 114th edition of the Kentucky Futurity.

The Kentucky Futurity is the second leg of trotting's Triple Crown sandwiched between the Hambletonian and the Yonkers Trot. The Yonkers Trot is schedule for late November at Yonkers Raceway.

Glidemaster covered the one-mile second heat in 1:53 1/5 as he defeated E L Mikko by 1 1/2 lengths. E L Mikko had past Glidemaster in the stretch, but Hall of Fame driver John Campbell was able to rouse Glidemaster to retake the lead.

Glidemaster and E L Mikko each won their respective first heat elimination races. The first five across the finish line in each elimination advanced to the second heat.

Coming in third place in the second heat was Make You Mine with Algiers Hall finishing fourth. This year's Kentucky Futurity had a total purse of $526,000 with more than $260,000 going to the winner.

Glidemaster is trained by Blair Burgess for owners Robert Burgess, Karin Olsson-Burgess, Marsha Cohen, and Brittany Farms. The colt has career earnings of better than $1.5 million with nine wins. This year he has won half of his 12 starts for $1.4 million.

Glidemaster will make his next start in the Breeders' Crown the end of October at Woodbine. Burgess said that a decision on the Yonkers Trot has not been finalized.

"We'll have to see how it goes before we make a decision," said Burgess. "The race is on a half-mile track and it's late in the season."

Glidemaster won his elimination heat in the same time as his winning second heat. E L Mikko covered his elimination mile in 1:53 4/5.
