The 2000 World Series, aka The Subway Series because it pitted New York rivals the Yankees and the Mets against each other, heated up in Game 2. Already at odds entering the series, tension grew between Roger Clemens and Mike Piazza when in the first inning Piazza's broken bat flew back to the mound, towards Clemens. The hurler picked it up and threw it at Piazza, who was running towards first base. The bat chunk landed about two feet away from the Mets' catcher. The two exchanged words, the benches cleared -- although no punches were thrown -- and play was delayed about two minutes. Considered a good-luck charm, the Giants insisted on having manager Dusty Baker's 3-year-old son, Darren, in the clubhouse during the World Series. He got an up-close look at the action in Game 5 when Darren approached home plate to collect Kenny Lofton's bat after the slugger hit a triple. He was quickly met at home by J.T. Snow, who had crossed the plate to score. Despite suffering from a ruptured tendon that doctors sewed a wall of stitches into to hold in place, Boston pitcher Curt Schilling pitched in Game 2 of the 2004 World Series. Schilling, whose sock was soaked with blood, earned the victory in his outing and gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in its series sweep over St. Louis. Boston's victory marked its first World Series title in 86 years.
