WNBA: Observations And Interviews

Closer Look At Indiana, Schedules, Uniforms

POSTED: Friday, June 8, 2007

Take a closer look at why this could be Indiana's year and why some teams are on the court more than others. Also, catch up with Seimone Augustus of the Lynx.

Fever Pitch?
Indiana is built to win. With the Tamikas -- Catchings and Whitmore -- at forward, veterans Anna DeForge and Tully Bevilaqua in the backcourt, and solid play in the middle, the Fever is long on experience and talent. The deep squad has no glaring weakness and, after spending years playing third fiddle to Connecticut and Detroit in the Eastern Conference, its time may have arrived.

Unlucky 13
On June 6, the Mercury and Lynx had played eight games; the Sparks, Storm and Shock meanwhile, had suited up for only four. The main reason for this oddity: when the Charlotte Sting folded last fall, it left the league with 13 teams, causing headaches for the schedule makers.

5 Questions with the Lynx Seimone Augustus, 2006 Rookie of the Year
Q: You spent much of the off-season playing in Moscow. What were your impressions of Russia?
A: I didn’t get out much. It was that cold. What I liked about it -- it was great, there was a great atmosphere around (the games). The people are nice, whether you speak a little Russian or just English -- they were fun to be around.

Q: How much Russian did you pick up?
A: Very little: hi, bye.

Q: How much time have you had off since the beginning of your senior year at LSU?
A: (I had) maybe about two weeks where I didn't have anything to do with basketball.

Q: You're a veteran now. How much different is this season than last?
A: It definitely feels good to know that I've got some experience under my belt, know the tempo of the game and what to expect out of each team. But, as far as being a veteran, it’s a tough task. We've got a lot of rookies on this team, so you not only have to lead by example but be a vocal leader as well.

Q: You led LSU to three straight Final Four appearances. Then you leave for the WNBA and they still reach the Final Four. Maybe you were overrated in college.
A: (Laughs) Naw -- (LSU) has a great program, they are going to win whether I am there or not.

Fashion Review
Overall, the revamped uniforms are an improvement; the new design is fresh and eye-catching. The below-the-number nameplates are creative but sometimes difficult to read -- especially the longer and/or hyphenated surnames. And that’s not good for a league trying to increase player visibility.

Third-Round Picks That Stick
The WNBA Draft lasts three rounds, so third-round picks have to beat the odds just to make the team, let alone have a long career. Some of the more notable third rounders include: Tamika Whitmore, New York (1999) -- now with Indiana; Dominique Canty, Detroit (1999) -- now with Chicago; Taj McWilliams-Franklin, Orlando (1999) -- now with Los Angeles; Amber Jacobs, Minnesota (2004); and Jamie Carey, Phoenix Mercury (2005) -- now with the Connecticut Sun.
