Meyer May Reinstate Joiner As UF Captain

Football Coach Says He's Not Sure About Decision

Florida coach Urban Meyer didn't rule out giving senior safety Tony Joiner his role back as a team captain during Wednesday's SEC teleconference with the media, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

"I've never really done that to a player," Meyer said. "That's a crushing blow because obviously you're forever remembered as a captain here. So I'm not sure. A lot of it defends on, we're halfway through a season and there's not a whole lot of leadership, not a whole lot of older players on this team so he’s a guy that our team is counting on to provide some leadership and he acted like we don't want a captain to act on a Monday night. It's too early to tell that. I haven't even given it any thought yet."

Joiner is upset at himself over being arrested last Tuesday morning when he tried to remove his girlfriend's car from a towing company lot. The state attorney elected not to press any charges, but Meyer took away Joiner's role as captain away.

"He told me immediately, as soon as it happened," Joiner said. "That was the worst thing in the world, to be stripped of my captaincy and just knowing how hard I worked to get where I was and to lose it on a boneheaded mistake and a boneheaded decision. It was tough for me."

He hopes to regain Meyer's trust but that wasn't the most upsetting thing to him.

"It's disappointing my team and disappointing the Gator Nation, having a distraction going into the biggest game of the season," Joiner said.

He said his teammates have stood behind him, however.

"They were there for me," Joiner said. "They forgave me, they realized I had made a mistake and they were all there for me."
