Royals Rally To Beat Red Sox

POSTED: Friday, July 10, 2009

(Sports Network) - David DeJesus hit a two-run homer and Willie Bloomquist finished 3-for-5 with an RBI triple, as the Kansas City Royals downed the Boston Red Sox, 8-6, in the opener of a four-game series at Fenway Park.

Alberto Callaspo delivered two hits, two RBI and a run scored for the Royals, who halted a two-game skid and won for the fourth time in their last six games. Mark Teahen added three hits and two runs scored in the win.

"You never know what can happen in this game," said Bloomquist. "We just kept battling and putting together good at-bats, and that kept us in the game."

David Ortiz drilled a two-run homer -- the 300th of his career -- while Dustin Pedroia finished 3-for-5 with a homer and two runs scored for Boston, which fell to 3-4 on its current 10-game homestand and is now tied atop the AL East along with the New York Yankees. Kevin Youkilis added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the loss.

The Royals came to bat in the top of the sixth inning trailing by two runs. Boston reliever Manny Delcarmen was on the mound and he was immediately greeted by Teahen's double to deep center field. Delcarmen induced consecutive groundouts, but Callaspo also hit a double that brought the visitors within 5-4.

Justin Masterson (3-3) entered from the Red Sox bullpen and the first batter he faced was Ryan Freel, whose RBI single brought home Callaspo. DeJesus then waited on a Masterson breaking ball and belted it over the wall in right field for a 7-5 Royals lead.

"We've turned games over to our bullpen many times and been in pretty good shape, but we just couldn't hold them down," said Boston manager Terry Francona.

After Bloomquist's triple in the top of the eighth made it 8-5, the Red Sox loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Mark Kotsay's fly ball to deep center allowed Jason Bay to tag-up from third and the Sox drew within two runs.

KC closer Joakim Soria came into the game and struck out Nick Green to escape further damage.

Soria pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 14th save of the campaign.

"Once we got Soria in the game, we feel confident he can do the job and he did the job as usual," said DeJesus.

Kansas City starting pitcher Luke Hochevar (5-3) earned the win after he tossed six innings and allowed five runs on nine hits with five strikeouts against one walk.

"(Our batters) definitely picked me up," said Hochevar. "We've been swinging the bats well. The momentum switches and you go back out and continue to compete."

The Red Sox grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Pedroia doubled with one out and scored when Youkilis followed with a single. The next batter was Ortiz, whose 11th home run of the season gave the hosts a three-run edge.

Bay's RBI single in the third brought home Youkilis for a four-run cushion.

The Royals drew within one after they scored three times in the top of the fourth inning. Jose Guillen led off with a single and Teahen stroked another base hit directly after to put runners on the corners. Teahen stole second base with one out, and a Miguel Olivo base hit brought home Guillen for KC's first run.

When Olivo stole second base, an errant throw by Jason Varitek that ended up in shallow center field allowed Teahen -- who had advanced to third on the Olivo hit -- to cross the plate. Callaspo's double capped the rally.

Pedroia's solo blast over the Green Monster in the fifth gave the Sox a 5-3 advantage.

Game Notes

Boston starting pitcher Brad Penny has only one win over his last eight starts. He allowed three runs on six hits in five innings but did not factor in the decision...The Royals outhit the Red Sox, 13-10...It was the seventh home run of the season for DeJesus.
