Orlando Magic guard Darrell Armstrong was arrested early Monday for allegedly slapping a police officer and resisting arrest, according to Local 6 News.
Armstrong was booked into the Orange County jail on charges of battery on a law-enforcement officer and resisting arrest without violence. He was released after posting $1,000 bond.
Orlando police said Armstrong, 35, reportedly ran into the middle of Orange Avenue at about 2 a.m. Monday and started banging on a cab full of people after the Firestone Club closed.
When an officer Theresa Joyce asked Armstrong to get out of the street he allegedly refused, began cursing at her and eventually slapped her, according to police.
Joyce severely sprained her thumb while trying to restrain Armstrong, Rolon said.
Upon his release, Armstrong admitted slapping the officer's hand away but added he was provoked.
"Don't put your hands on me, that's all I'm saying," said Armstrong, who had a rip in his shirt. "I only knocked her hand. I only hit my kids."
"We are just becoming aware of the situation," Magic general manager John Gabriel said. "We know Darrell and we're, obviously, very surprised at the news. We always support our players to the best of our abilities.
Armstrong's agent, Glenn Schwartzman, did not immediately return a phone message, and it could not be immediately determined if Armstrong has a lawyer.
Armstrong joined the Magic in 1994. He became an unrestricted free agent July 1, completing a five-year $18-million contract. He made $4.01 million last season.
He averaged 9.4 points and 3.9 assists in 28.7 minutes last season.
In four of the past five seasons, Armstrong played in every game, despite a variety of injuries.
