MIAMI -- Juan Encarnacion homered and drove in four runs,
as the Florida Marlins completed a three-game sweep of the Phillies and
eliminated Philadelphia from playoff contention with an 8-4 win at rainy Pro
Player Stadium Thursday night.
Juan Pierre reached base safely four times, scored twice and earned the first
200-hit season in Marlins' history. Derrek Lee had a pair of hits and scored
three times, as the Marlins won their fourth straight game, swept the Phillies
for the third time in their last four series, and lowered their magic number
for clinching the NL wild card to one.
Brad Penny (14-10) continued his mastery of the Phillies, winning his third
straight decision with an eight-inning effort. He gave up four runs on seven
hits and three walks while fanning five, and ran his record to 3-0 with a 2.05
ERA against Philadelphia this year.
Jim Thome hit a two-run homer and Placido Polanco had a pair of hits, scored
once and drove in one, but the Phillies still lost for the fifth straight game
and ran their post-season drought to 10 years.
Randy Wolf (16-10) lost for the first time in six starts, allowing four runs
on seven hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out three while
having his personal four-game winning streak snapped.
Florida took a 4-1 lead in the third when Pierre singled with one out, moved
to third one out later on a Lee base hit and scored on Miguel Cabrera's
single. Then Encarnacion stepped up to provide the big blow, a three-run homer
over the scoreboard in left, his 19th of the year and second in as many
nights.
In the fifth, the Marlins added another run. Lee led off with a single and
Cabrera walked before Encarnacion struck out. After Jeff Conine popped out,
Alex Gonzalez delivered a double to left to bring in Lee.
The Phillies cut the lead to 5-2 in the sixth. Polanco led off with a single
and Bobby Abreu walked. Two outs later, Jimmy Rollins singled to plate
Polanco.
But the Marlins tacked on three in the bottom of the frame to seal the win.
Luis Castillo was hit by a pitch to lead off and Jose Mesa's throwing error on
Pierre's bunt single left runners at second and third. After Ivan Rodriguez
grounded out, Lee was intentionally walked and, after Cabrera popped out,
Encarnacion drove in a run with an infield single. Then, Conine singled to
right to bring home a pair.
In the eighth, Philadelphia scored its final two runs. Abreu singled with one
out and Thome followed with his 45th homer of the year.
Wolf doubled with one away in the third for the Phillies' first hit. He took
third on a Marlon Byrd groundout and scored when Polanco hit a bouncer toward
short and Gonzalez slipped and fell on the wet infield dirt after fielding the
ball.
