PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Police say former Major League relief pitcher Jeff Reardon thinks his medication made him rob a jewelry store.

Reardon briefly appeared in a Florida courtroom Tuesday after being arrested Monday and charged with armed robbery.

Police said that Reardon, 50, went into Hamilton Jewelers in Palm Beach Gardens Monday and handed an employee a note asking for money and jewelry. Authorities said the note indicated that he had a gun and that if employees cooperated, no one would be hurt.

Police said they recovered $170 from Reardon when they arrested him outside the store, but he did not have a gun. They also said he apologized.

Reardon's attorney, Mitchell Beers, said the former all-star has been on medication for depression since the death of his 20-year-old son from a drug overdose in February of last year. He's also taking medicine following a heart procedure last week.

Reardon, sixth on the all-time saves list, was released on $5,000 bond.

Reardon played for teams including the Montreal Expos, the New York Mets and the Boston Red Sox.

He is required to undergo a mental evaluation and will be back in court Jan. 30.
