Salt Lake City, UT -- (Sports Network) - Craig Smith poured in 22 points and had 16 rebounds as the fourth-seeded Boston College Eagles cruised past the 12th-seeded Montana Grizzlies, 69-56, in second-round action in the Minneapolis bracket of the NCAA Tournament.
Jared Dudley added 20 points and seven rebounds for Boston College (28-7), which advanced to the Sweet 16 and will face the winner of Sunday's Villanova-Arizona matchup on Friday, March 24.
Tyrese Rice donated 14 points and was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc in the victory.
Jordan Hasquet led Montana (24-7) with 13 points while Andrew Strait and Matt Martin each netted 11 points for the Grizzlies, who played in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in more than three decades after knocking off the fifth-seeded Nevada Wolf Pack, 87-79, in the first round.
After holding only a two-point lead at halftime, the Eagles controlled the second half of the game and outscored the Grizzlies 37-26 over the final twenty minutes.
The Eagles opened the second half with an 8-2 surge to take a 40-32 advantage. Dudley jump started things with a three-pointer and Louis Hinnant capped the stretch with a trey of his own.
Later in the half, six straight points by Boston College pushed the lead to 46-35 with around 12 1/2 minutes remaining.
The Eagles made it a 14-point game after Rice drained back-to-back three- pointers for a 54-40 advantage with almost 10 1/2 minutes to play.
Rice continued to have the hot hand from long distance and gave Boston College a 62-45 lead with 6:25 remaining after drilling a deep three-pointer off the left wing.
A three-point play by Dudley gave BC a commanding 21-point advantage at 67-46 with just under five minutes on the clock.
The Grizzlies ended the game on 10-2 run, but it was too little, too late.
Trailing for the majority of the first half, Boston College closed out the opening twenty minutes on an 8-2 run where Smith scored all the points inside the paint for a 32-30 lead at halftime.
Smith led all scorers at the break with 16 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field. He also dominated the glass with 12 rebounds.
The Grizzlies were able to stay in the game by going 4-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first half. Strait shot 5-of-10 from the floor for 10 points to pace Montana.
