Buffalo, NY -- (Sports Network) - J.P. Dumont scored 5:05 into overtime to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal set at HSBC Arena.
Ottawa had tied the game up with 90 seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra session.
However, a turnover in the neutral zone allowed Taylor Pyatt to skate into the Ottawa end. From the left circle, Pyatt attempted to pass the puck to the right side, but it popped into the air after an Ottawa player deflected it. But, Dumont grabbed it out of the air and, with the puck rolling on the ice, snapped a shot that went over the right shoulder of Emery and into the left corner of the net for the win.
"I shot the puck," said Dumont. "To tell you the truth I don't know if it went straight in. Doesn't matter, it went in. In overtime, it's never going to be a pretty goal."
Maxim Afinogenov and Chris Drury scored for the Sabres, who now hold a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.
Ryan Miller continued his stellar play and stopped 26 shots for Buffalo, which has now won five straight games.
Jason Spezza scored both goals and Daniel Alfredsson assisted on the goals for the Senators. Ray Emery stopped 21 shots in the losing effort.
"They haven't made as many turnovers, given up the opportunities we have," said Senators coach Bryan Murray. "I felt we worked hard and played a pretty responsible game but we can't find a way to score. All we've done in the whole series is play from behind."
The Sabres will look to wrap up the series when Game 4 is played on Thursday at HSBC Arena.
The Sabres came storming out of the gates and used their superior speed to take control of the early part of the game.
Less than two minutes in, Afinogenov skated into the Ottawa zone on a breakaway. He deked from the backhand to the forehand, but Emery's right pad hugged the post and kept the puck out of the net.
Buffalo's early pressure paid off when it grabbed a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal.
With Wade Redden in the box for cross-checking, Daniel Briere brought the puck from his own end into the Ottawa zone. From the top of the left circle, Briere fed the puck to Jason Pominville in the slot. Pominville skated to the top of the right circle and let fly with a slap shot that Drury, parked in front of the net, deflected over the right shoulder of Emery 9:24 in.
Ottawa got its act together after the goal and slowed the game down and outshot Buffalo, 10-5, in the first period. But, most of Ottawa's chances came from the perimeter and the team was held scoreless in the first period.
Buffalo started the second period strong and almost took a 2-0 lead when Afinogenov skated in all alone. But, his shot from the low right circle glanced off the right post a little over three minutes in.
Ottawa again outshot Buffalo, 7-4, in the second period, but was unable to put any past Miller.
The Senators best chance of the period came when Martin Havlat skated into the Sabres zone and from the low left circle centered the puck to Dany Heatley in the low slot. Heatley got off a one-timer, but Miller moved into position and stopped the shot with his body and did not allow a rebound with 8:24 left.
The Senators finally got on the board with a 5-on-3 power play in the third period after Rory Fitzpatrick and Jochen Hecht got called for penalties.
The Senators had several chances during the opportunity, but Miller kept coming up with big saves.
However, Redden had the puck and let loose with a shot from the right point. The puck went wide, bounced off the back boards and went right to the left side, where Spezza tapped it into the wide-open net 5:47 in.
Buffalo, though, took a 2-1 lead a little less than five minutes later. Hecht outworked his opponent behind the net and sent a backhand pass to the left circle. Derek Roy accepted the pass and immediately fed it to Afinogenov cutting into the slot. Afinogenov one-timed it into the right corner of the net for his third goal of the postseason.
Teppo Numminen got called for tripping with 2:04 to play and the Senators took advantage.
Brian Pothier received the puck in the high slot and cranked a slap shot on net. There was traffic in front of the net and Spezza deflected the disc past Miller with 90 seconds left and the teams skated into overtime.
