The Atlanta Falcons release of running back Michael Turner was attributed to a failed physical, according the team's official transaction report.

To save almost $16 million under the salary cap, Atlanta released Turner, defensive end John Abraham and cornerback Dunta Robinson on Friday.

A reason was not listed for Turner's failed physical. Turner, 31, had groin and elbow injuries during the second half of last season, but he played in every game. However, he injured an ankle in the playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Turner was expected to be released. His base salary in 2013 was slated to be $6.9 million and a cap figure of $8.9 million. He rushed for 6,081 yards in five seasons with the Falcons and scored 60 touchdowns.
