Flyers acquire goalie Steve Mason from Columbus
According to reports, the Flyers have sent a draft pick to Columbus for goalie Steve Mason. That’s right. Sergei Bobrovsky’s backup. That’s right. Sergei Bobrovsky was the Flyers’ backup last year. In 13 games this season, Mason has a 2.95 goals-against average and .899 save percentage. Mason has a $2.9 million cap hit this season and will be restricted free agent after this season. Mason was the NHL’s rookie of the year in 2009 with a 2.29 goals-against average and .916 save percentage in 61 games. Since then, he’s posted goals-against averages of 3.06, 3.03 and 3.39 in the last three respective seasons. How Mason figures into the Flyers’ plans remains to be seen. Flyers GM Paul Holmgren will address the media after the 3 p.m. trade deadline.
