Charlie Spoonhour, who built Missouri State into a nationally recognized men's basketball program, died Wednesday. He was 72.

Spoonhour, who was also the head coach at St. Louis and Nevada-Las Vegas, had battled health issues since undergoing a lung transplant in 2010.

He coached 19 seasons at the Division I level, compiling a record of 373-202.

Spoonhour guided Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State) to a 197-81 record, including five NCAA Tournament appearances, from 1983-92.

He also revived St. Louis' program, leading the Billikens to a 122-90 mark and three NCAA appearances.

Spoonhour finished his coaching career at UNLV from 2001-04, guiding the Runnin' Rebels to a 57-31 record.
