A number of teams avoided arbitration by signing players to contracts on Friday, with 2013 American League Cy Young winner Max Scherzer being the most significant.

The Detroit Tigers signed Scherzer to a one-year deal worth $15.525 million, CBSSports.com reported.

Scherzer, 29, gets a sizable raise from the $6.725 million he made last season. That's primarily because he was the American League Cy Young winner in 2013, when he went 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA and 240 strikeouts.

--- The Washington National signed two key players to contracts.

Nationals All-Star right-hander Jordan Zimmermann agreed to a two-year, $24 million contract with the club, ESPN.com reported.

The deal buys out the final two years of arbitration eligibility for Zimmermann. He can become a free agent after the 2015 season.

The Nationals also signed shortstop Ian Desmond to a two-year contract, CSNWashington.com reported. He will receive $6.5 million and 2014 and $11 million in 2015 and will become a free agent following the 2015 season.

--- The New York Yankees signed outfielder Brett Gardner and pitchers Shawn Kelley, Ivan Nova and David Robertson to one-year deals.

Gardner, 30, will earn $5.6 million, according to the New York Post. Robertson, 28, will get $5.215 million, according to the Post report. Kelley, 27, will receive $1.765 million, and Nova, 27, will get $3.3 million.

---The Atlanta Braves and starting pitcher Mike Minor reached agreement on a one-year, $3.85 million deal, MLB.com reported Friday.

Minor gets a significant pay hike over the $505,000 he made last season.

Right-handed pitcher Jeremy Hellickson, outfielder Matt Joyce, catcher Jose Lobaton, left-handed pitcher Jake McGee, left-handed pitcher Cesar Ramos and infielder/outfielder Sean Rodriguez each agreed to terms.

---The Chicago White Sox agreed to terms on one-year contracts with infielder Gordon Beckham and outfielder Alejandro De Aza, the club announced.

Beckham receives $4.175 million in base salary this year, while De Aza gets $4.25 million.

---The Cubs and 28-year-old reliever Pedro Strop agreed on a one-year deal worth $1.325 million, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

---The Los Angeles Angels and reliever Ernesto Frieri agreed on a one-year, $3.8 million deal, MLB.com reported.
