Miami Dolphins OK referendum on stadium
Plan seeks tax money for stadium upgrades
The Miami Dolphins and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez held a news conference Monday to announce a referendum on whether the county should help pay for major renovations to Sun Life Stadium.
The Dolphins believe passage by Miami-Dade County voters would help the chance of the plan's approval by the Florida Legislature. Team owner Stephen Ross earlier resisted holding a referendum on the issue, saying there wasn't time for a vote before legislators would need to act.
Renovations are expected to cost $400-million and would include a partial roof structure according to renderings. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is offering to pay for 51-percent of the cost.
It's believed the renovations are needed for the stadium to host future Super Bowls.
NFL owners are scheduled to decide on a location for Super Bowl L (50) on May 22nd. The vote is expected to happen before that date.
