After three consecutive close wins to open conference play, No. 15 Massachusetts will play its final nonconference game when it travels to Elon on Saturday night. The Minutemen squaked out an 88-87 victory over George Mason on the road earlier in the week that even coach Derek Kellogg admitted was on the lucky side. "We got a little lucky there at the end, and sometimes luck is something that you need," Kellogg told MassLive.com.Elon is coming off a massive win of its own, snapping Davidson's 23-game home conference winning streak with an 87-85 overtime triumph. Elon overcame a 14-point deficit in the final four-plus minutes to defeat the Wildcats, and picking up its third straight win for the second time this season. "That's the greatest win I've ever been a part of," guard Jack Isenbarger told the Burlington Times-News.TV: 7 p.m. ET, None.ABOUT MASSACHUSETTS (15-1): Point guard Chaz Williams spent much of this week in a walking boot, but his left ankle appeared to be fine as he racked up 26 points and eight assists on Wednesday against George Mason. Williams is sixth in the league in scoring at 16.1 points per game and ranks second nationally with 7.6 assists per game. The Phoenix did take the Minutemen to overtime last season in Springfield, Mass., but if Williams continues to put up the big numbers, it will be tough sledding for any UMass opponent.ABOUT ELON (10-8): Forward Lucas Troutman has been a huge part of Elon's latest three-game win streak, averaging 20 points per game including a season-high 28-point outburst against Davidson. Troutman's biggest improvement from last season has been at the free-throw line, where he is up to 73 percent on nearly five trips per game. If he can get inside and get UMass big men like Cady Lalanne and Raphiael Putney in foul trouble early, the Phoenix could have a big advantage.TIP-INS1. Saturday is the first time Elon has hosted a ranked team at Alumni Gym.2. UMass is 3-0 on the road this season.3. Williams passed Julius Erving and Marcus Camby on UMass' all-time scoring list Wednesday. He stands 12th with 1,394 points.PREDICTION: Massachusetts 89, Elon 77
