Reports: Phillies place Lee on trade waivers

Philadelphia doesn't expect team to claim pitcher

Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee was placed on trade waivers, according to multiple reports, but don't expect to see him changing teams in a straight waiver claim.

Since Lee is owed $87.5 million over the next three seasons, he's unlikely to get claimed.

Lee, like a lot of major league players this month, was placed on waivers just so his team has the option to trade him if it's bowled over by an offer before the Aug. 31 deadline to set postseason rosters. All players must be placed on waivers to be traded after July 31.

Heading into his Sunday start against Arizona, Lee is 2-6 with a 3.73 ERA in 18 starts this year.

In December 2010, Lee signed a five-year, $120 million free agent deal with the Phillies that includes a $27.5 million club option for 2016 (or a $12.5 million buyout).
