The Vancouver Canucks signed their first-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft to undisclosed contract terms on Friday.
Right winger Jake Virtanen was the No. 6 overall selection last month.
"Such an honour to sign with the Vancouver Canucks!" Virtanen posted on Twitter. "I'd like to thank everybody who's helped me get to this point especially my family!!"
The 17-year-old had 45 goals and 71 points in 71 games last season with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League. He added three goals and three assists in seven games for Canada's bronze medalists in the 2014 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.
Virtanen played most of last season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder before undergoing surgery in May.
The Canucks earlier signed their other 2014 first-round pick, center Jared McCann, the 24th overall selection.
