Avatarland Breaks Ground

It has happened. Two and a half YEARS after being announced, and just days after Camp Minnie-Mickey entered Yesterland, Disney brass held a ceremonial groundbreaking for Avatarland. Cute touch: they used over-sized blue shovels.

Ok , the blue guy wasn't really there, and the real working title is "Pandora: the World of Avatar." But everyone will call it Avatarland, Just like everyone calls the park's last big addition Everest instead of "Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain"

No new art was released today, but Disney says "Guests will experience the wonders of Pandora when they fly with banshees and explore a rich natural environment with mountains that float and interactive plants that glow at night."

Here's a link to more details of what that really means, from a past Theme World entry.
The big goal is to turn Animal Kingdom into a park that regularly  stays open at night -- including  a night version of the safari,  and a night spectacular centered around the tree of life.

Look  for a lot more to come out from Disney, and from my sources in the months and years ahead.  Avatarland is expected to start opening in late 2016 or 2017.
Disney's video of the groundbreaking is below.
