Marlins' Fernandez dies in Miami Beach boat accident

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Marlins ace pitcher Jose Fernandez has been killed in an early-morning boat accident off Miami Beach.

The Marlins confirmed that Fernandez, 24, was one of three people killed in the accident in Government Cut between Miami Beach and Fisher Island.

"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez," a statement from the Marlins reads. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."

Condolences poured in on social media.

"Thoughts an prayers go out to the Fernandez family! Such devastating news to wake up to. RIP Jose Fernandez," Vince Velazquez, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher, said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Jose Fernandez's family & the Marlins organization during this incredibly difficult time," a statement from the Milwaukee Brewers said.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott also offered his condolences.

"I had the opportunity to meet Jose Fernandez in 2014. Our prayers are with his family and the Miami Marlins," Scott said.

Sunday afternoon's game vs. the Atlanta Braves has been canceled.

Born in Cuba, Fernandez emigrated to the U.S. in his teens and settled in the Tampa area.

The first-round draft choice of the Marlins in 2011, Fernandez quickly made his way to the majors and became an instant star, being named to the National League All-Star game in his rookie season.

Despite injury plagued seasons, Fernandez remained the Marlins ace.

This season, Fernandez was 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA.

Fernandez and his girlfriend were expectant parents.​
