Orlando Magic fires some basketball operations staff before new hire

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Magic fired a handful of basketball operations staff members Monday as management made its pick for the new president of basketball operations, News 6 sports director David Pingalore has learned through an NBA source.

Jeff Weltman accepted an offer to be Orlando Magic president of basketball operations, sources confirmed Monday evening to Pingalore.

Weltman is currently the general manager in Toronto, working under Raptors president Masai Ujiri.

Weltman spent 13 years with the Clippers as director of player personnel and six years as assistant general manager in Denver.

Weltman’s father, Harry Weltman, was a longtime general manager in the NBA and ABA.

When asked Monday for the number of employees fired, Magic management declined to comment.

The basketball operations manager, analytics manager and the salary cap manager are among those cut, sources told News 6.

It is not clear if interim general manager Matt Lloyd will remain as the general manager.

Pingalore has learned Lloyd is a candidate to remain the general manager, and several others are on the short list, including Marc Eversly, Philadelphia's vice president of player personnel; Trajan Langdo, Brooklyn's assistant general manager; and former Florida State University player Jeff Peterson, who is currently the Atlanta Hawks assistant general manager.

Rob Hennigan was fired April 13 after five losing seasons.
