Miami Gardens police said Bailey and Antwan Reeves were shot when someone in a four-door sedan pulled up next to them and opened fire.

Three other passengers, including two children, were inside the car at the time, but they were not injured.

Police said the victims drove themselves to Aventura Hospital. Bailey was undergoing surgery, while Reeves is recovering from surgery. He was listed in critical but stable condition.

"We are aware Stedman Bailey was involved in an incident (Tuesday) evening," the Rams said in a team statement. "We have spoken with Stedman and he is in the hospital in critical but stable condition. We are gathering facts about the situation and will provide updates as we learn more."

Bailey went to Miramar High School before playing for the West Virginia Mountaineers. He was a third-round draft pick for the St. Louis Rams in 2013, but he is currently serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Police said the shooter's car may be a Buick Regal.
