Tram crashes at Daytona International Speedway

4 suffer minor injuries, officials say

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A tram carrying about 30 passengers skimmed a wall Wednesday outside Daytona International Speedway, but no one was seriously injured, officials said.

The crash was reported around 10:30 a.m. as the passengers were driving through the tunnel near Turn 4 coming from the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

"We hit the wall and survived," Darryl Ferguson said.

Daytona Beach fire officials said four people suffered minor injuries. No one was taken to the hospital, but two victims went to the first aid station at the Speedway for treatment, officials said.

"I noticed that the trailer was getting too close to the tunnel wall. We started scraping and there was a slight jolt and we all flew forward," Jeff Ferguson said.

Jeff Ferguson suffered whiplash. His father Darryl, suffered a cut to his arm.

The Ferguson family, who is visiting from Canada, said they won't let a little fender bender hinder their NASCAR experience.

"It's a beautiful venue. Sunday is going to be great and better leave early, because traffic is going to be crazy," Jeff Ferguson said.

Speedweeks is underway at the speedway, and the Daytona 500 will take place Sunday.
