Man Says Bibles In Pocket Stopped Bullet

A 54-year-old Orange Park man credits two Gideon Bibles in his shirt pocket for saving his life when they stopped a bullet, according to WJXT-TV.

The man told police that two men he didn't recognize ambushed him with a rifle Monday as he carried bags to a trash bin behind the Christian outreach organization he runs.

"As I did so, two gentlemen stepped around dumpster and fired two shots at me," the victim said.

The victim's name is being withheld because his attackers are still at large. He said he had received death threats and the business had been burglarized several times.

One bullet hit the victim's hat, barely missing his head, and the other bullet was stopped short of entering the man's chest by the two Bibles, WJXT-TV reported.

The two men fled in opposite directions and have not been arrested.

"It's a shield and it protected me yesterday," the victim said.

He said he thinks the gunmen might have been looking for medical supplies that his organization ships globally for humanitarian aid. About $850,000 worth of supplies have been stolen in recent months, the victim said.

Other than a red mark and a pain in his chest, he wasn't injured.

The man said he was carrying two New Testament Bibles in his shirt pocket to give to friends. Police took the Bibles as evidence.
