A U.S. Postal Service worker in San Diego rescued eight baby chicks that were sent inside a box via priority mail, according to a Local 6 News report.
Officials said postal worker Joseph Harrell heard chirping noises coming from a large box sent to a woman near the North Park Post Office. However, the recipient was not home.
"I just heard the chicks," Harrell said. "It sounded like they were in stress. They were chirping loudly."
Workers called the woman and asked for permission to open the package and found the eight ducklings inside.
The chicks were fed and given water.
Local 6 reported that it is legal to send animals in the mail but USPS suggests overnight Express Mail.
No charges were expected over the incident.
