Missing Cemetery Corpse May Be Linked To Witchcraft
Police: Some Believe Stolen Skull Grants Powers
"We believe it's something other than someone digging (the body) up to steal jewelry," Lt. Darren Remillard said.Investigators said the 1820 grave of Sarah Symonds was dug up at the Bible Hill Cemetery in Hillsboro on Halloween night. The cemetery caretaker said he discovered a hole where Symonds' body was located and large mounds of dirt on each side of the grave.Officers said the culprits did not leave a trace of the deceased behind.A theory police are investigating is whether the body was snatched for witchcraft.Police said some believe that if a skull is stolen on Halloween night, it will grant powers to the owner."We are looking into the reasons why to see if there is any background Mrs. Symonds had in relation to why she would have been taken," Remillard said. With it being Halloween night and the fact that the hole was dug so perfectly, we don't believe it was grave robbers, because the way it was done and the way the dirt was positioned."Investigators said they are continuing to collect evidence in the case.
