Baby Beaten, Burned, Drugged, Police Say

Police Say As Many As 5 People Could Face Charges

Life support kept a baby breathing Tuesday morning after she was beaten, burned and drugged, police said.

EMTs rushed 6-week-old Diane Nelson to the hospital when police received a 911 call around 1:30 a.m. Monday from a baby-sitter who said the baby wasn't breathing, WDSU-TV in New Orleans reported.

Investigators said they examined Nelson at the hospital and found evidence of severe child abuse.

Bogalusa Police Department Sgt. Darrell Darden said the child had suffered blunt force trauma and head injuries consistent with being beaten with a fist. He said the baby also had been burned repeatedly, and had been forced to swallow some kind of prescription medication similar to Xanax.

"It's a terrible situation," Darden said. "What's best for the baby at this time is to find who done this and make them pay."

Police said as many as five people might be charged in the case, including the mother. If the baby dies, officers said they will file murder charges.

Darden said the infant had been scheduled for more tests, including two more brain scans.
