Local 6 Editorial: Homeless Should Not Be Considered Invisible

POSTED: Friday, April 13, 2007

  • The following is text from station general manager Henry Maldonado's editorial:

This is going to sound obvious, maybe even ridiculous, but I've got to say it. The homeless are people too.

But unfortunately they are people we try to make invisible.

We roll up our windows when they approach us and we keep looking forward and don't acknowledge their presence, even when annoying.

And we seem to seek solutions which keep them out of sight and that is wrong.

The homeless, like the rest of us, are many things -- some good, some bad, some annoying and some fascinating.

But think about what kind of message we send to our children when we make a homeless person invisible.

So, it should not come as a shock that most attacks on the homeless are committed by young people.

Is a crime against an invisible person not a crime? Of course it is and we have got to change.

Attacks against the homeless are up by 65 percent and Florida is the state where such attacks are most frequent.

New legislation is being considered to designate attacks against the homeless as hate crimes and we support it.

But we also urge you to make the homeless visible and to acknowledge that they are people like everybody else. And make sure your kids know this.

So, the next time a homeless person comes up to your car, instead of closing the window and looking forward, acknowledge their presence.

Tell them you have no change or no thank you. Or give something. But the worst thing you can do is make that person invisible.
