Atlantis Returns To Edwards AFB

Mission Had Construction Success, Some Troubles

Space shuttle Atlantis returned to Earth on Friday, gliding to a landing at California's Edwards Air Force Base.

The craft touched down at about 3:49 p.m. EDT in the first opportunity of the day at Edwards. An earlier attempt at the Kennedy Space Center had to be bypassed because of the threat of storms in the area.

The space agency prefers landings in Florida because then it does not have to pay to transport the orbiter back to Kennedy Space Center. NASA also had to forego two landing attempts there Thursday.

NASA had said that Atlantis has enough provisions to stay in orbit until Sunday.

The mission to the international space station -- new solar arrays were added to the outpost -- was extended because of problems with space station computers and an out-of-place thermal blanket on the shuttle.

NASA said Atlantis' 28th flight covered 5.8 million miles in 13 days, 20 hours and 11 minutes.
