CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- NASA's planned rollout of Atlantis likely will be delayed a day or two to give engineers more time to resolve problems encountered during an operation aimed at mating the winged spaceship with an external tank.
The 3.5-mile move to launch pad 39A from Kennedy Space Center's Vehicle Assembly Building is still scheduled for early Saturday, but it's likely that managers will decide to push it back to Sunday or Monday, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.
The delay would not affect plans to launch Atlantis and seven astronauts Oct. 8 on a mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope. NASA still has several days of padding -- or "contingency time" -- in the shuttle processing schedule.
NASA and contractor payload managers will meet on Thursday to review work that still needs to be completed before cargo for the flight is transferred to the pad Sept. 14.
