AT&T plans to deliver telephone service over the Internet -- voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP -- to the top 100 telephone markets in 2004.
The company said
in a news release that consumers in some major cities could see offers in the first quarter.
"We will be deploying the best VoIP technology on the nation's largest IP network, but we will be doing it with the most trusted and proven name in voice services," said Chief Executive Officer David Dorman.
He called the technology "the most significant, fundamental new technology shift in telecommunications in decades."
The company says that it already carries more Internet traffic on its network than any other U.S. company. It began offering the VoIP service to some business customers in 1997.
It also said businesses are attracted to VoIP technology because it simplifies access for both voice and data. Voice, video and data can all run under one network, savng money and increasing productivity.
AT&T has testing consumer VoIP services since October in three states. The trial offered participants unlimited local and long-distance services.
