Mission To Return With Pieces Of Sun
Dropoff Expected Sept. 8
POSTED: Friday, August 20, 2004
NASA's Genesis spacecraft is expected to drop a capsule containing solar particles back to Earth early next month.
Sept. 8, the container is expected to float back into the atmoshphere over Utah, where it will be caught by a helicopter.
The probe has been in space nearly 27 months, capturing atoms from the sun. NASA says the end of the flight will be the beginning of the scientific research, which is expected to tell more about the origins of the solar system.
Inside the vehicle, hexagonal wafers of pure silicon, gold, sapphire, diamond and other materials have imprisioned particles from the solar wind.
The samples will be the first brought back from outside Earth's orbit since the last Apollo mission to the moon in 1972.
Two helicopters with a crew of three will try to snag the craft with an 18-foot pole as it floats under a parasail-style parachute.
