High-Flying Planes Will Also Film Launch
Local 6 News reported 107 high definition, still, video and film cameras will view the craft for possible danger.Shuttle Columbia only had a few cameras in use and some were not working, according to the report.An external tank camera will allow a live feed from the underside of the shuttle in real time.Engineers can check for damage to the fragile thermal protective shield on the orbiter's belly during liftoff, Local 6 News reporter Donald Forbes said."These images are going to help us understand how the shuttle performs," NASA spokeswoman June Malone said. "In that way, it is a great safety improvement for the whole shuttle system."NASA will also have some high-flying airplanes mounted with special cameras to film the shuttle's launch, Local 6 News has learned.The launch has officially been set for 3:51 p.m. on July 13.Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.
