Woman killed when train strikes car in New Smyrna Beach

Car catches fire after fatal crash

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A woman was killed early Friday when a train struck her car in New Smyrna Beach, police said.

The fatal crash was reported around 3:30 a.m. at the Canal Street crossing near U.S. 1.

New Smyrna Beach police said the conductor tried to stop the train after spotting the car on the tracks. The train struck the car, which caught fire, police said.

Police said it's believed that the woman, who appeared to the driver, was the only person in the car. She has not been identified.

An investigation is continuing.

The crash prompted the closure Canal Street and the 10th Street crossing, about a block away.
