SCOTTSMOOR, Fla. -- Authorities reopened the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 Thursday evening after closing the highway for more than 12 hours.
A United Parcel Service tractor-trailer hauling caustic chemicals caught fire and burned on the highway Thursday morning.
The fire was first reported at 1:15 a.m. at mile marker 230 in Scottsmoor. Traffic officers diverted motorists off the interstate toward U.S. Highway 1 as a private cleaning crew arrived after sunrise to remove the burned-out debris piece-by-piece.
No one was injured in the fire.
“The truck completely burned, but it was contained," Orlando Dominguez, spokesman for Brevard County Fire-Rescue, told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
He said the tractor-trailer contained a variety of chemicals, including nickel sulfate and hypophosphate ammonia. Dominguez described the chemicals as lung irritants.
“It was a UPS truck and apparently one of its tires caught on fire and spread to the rest of the vehicle,” Dominguez said.
An investigation into the fire continues.
