WINTER PARK, Fla. -- A Winter Park police officer who avoided life-threatening injuries during a horrendous crash by wearing his seat belt is urging others to buckle up as his agency cracks down on violators.
"It's only by the grace of God that I made it," said Officer Edison Williams, who saw the wreckage of his police cruiser on Thursday for the first time since the Feb. 20 crash.
Williams was headed home when a driver ran a red light and crashed into his car, leaving Williams dazed with a broken leg.
"Look at the stretching and the tearing," Williams said, pointing to the car.
Williams said it was seat belt and air bags that prevented a bad situation from becoming much worse.
"We always hear to wear our seat belts, but I think this brought this home now. It's reinforced -- that sat belts saves lives," he said.
Williams' fellow officers are now cracking down on motorists who fail to wear their seat belts.
"Statewide, click it or ticket. We're trying to get the word out to people," Williams said. "I guarantee you that for the rest of my life I will be wearing a seat belt."
