A drunken-driving investigation took a bizarre turn after a driver tried to use pennies to pass a Breathalyzer test, according to a WDIV-TV report.
Police said the 28-year-old Utica man tried the penny trick when he was taken into the station after leading officers on a high-speed chase and failing a sobriety test.
"I'm assuming the man must have in his mind some type of an urban legend," said Lt. Donald Foster, of the Royal Oak Police Department.
Squad cars pursued the man as his pickup truck reached speeds close to 100 mph while swerving through traffic on Interstate 696, Local 4 reported. The man pulled his truck over after a chase that reportedly lasted for several miles.
"After stopping the vehicle, we detected that the driver had been drinking," Foster said.
The Breathalyzer test revealed the man's blood-alcohol content to be nearly double the legal limit, according to police.
The man faces several charges, including fleeing police and driving while intoxicated.
